It doesn’t matter who you are, we all get it. You know, that thing that creeps up in photos. You have no idea its there, and once you realize it, no matter how beautiful the photo, you hate it.
The infamous double chin. Yuck.
If you have hired a professional photographer, they will be able to help pose you using their technique, knowledge and lighting to help minimize it. I can’t stress to you enough - a professional isn’t just someone with a decent camera and a website. See last weeks Tips on Tuesday about choosing the right photographer for you. The difference between a true professional and a person with a kind-of-decent camera is a million miles. Invest your money wisely; choose the right one for you.
If you are shooting with your own camera at home, make sure to always be at least eye level, or better yet, shooting at a downward angle. Hold the camera up just a little bit and tilt down, it’s much more flattering.
During a session with me, you will hear me say “tighten up” or “chicken neck”. You will hear me promise a million times over “it feels weird but looks good”. (I got that line from my favorite headshot photographer Peter Hurley www.peterhurley.com) I will always ask you to jut out your chin a little. It may feel awkward but it slims your neck. There is a happy medium between looking freakish and stepping outside of what feels comfortable. I will help you find that happy place.
I will remind you about your posture a million times over. It’s natural to slouch, we all do it. Having nice, strong, lean lines (while still staying relaxed) will help.
Finally, another tip to remember is to push your tongue into the roof of your mouth when smiling. This simple act will help you be conscious of tightening your neck muscles and smoothing things out.
Your professional photographer will help guide you in many other areas as well. It is truly amazing what a certain angle of your shoulders and adjustment of weight on one leg or another can do for your photos.
See you next week for more Tips on Tuesday!
